Overview Accident Investigator position in the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD), Investigative Services Bureau (ISD), Criminal Investigations Division (CID). The incumbent is responsible for investigating traffic accidents and related activities in the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia as part of a team within MPD. The position is covered under the National Association of Government Employees (NAGE) bargaining unit and may require payroll deductions for an agency fee. Responsibilities Reviews and reconciles hit & run traffic crash reports. Investigates and conducts interviews with complainants and witnesses via telephone, email, and in person (District of Columbia, Maryland or Virginia). Communicates with insurance agents, car rental representatives, FedEx personnel, Metro Transit authorities, and other local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies. Investigates the accident scene and canvasses the scene for witnesses, evidence, traffic signals, stop signs, etc. Reviews cameras (CCTV, LPR, private or business cameras, and federal cameras) to identify vehicle tags and other evidence related to hit & run incidents. Prepares case jackets and Hit and Run worksheets according to OAG procedures. Conducts WALES, NCIC and Justice searches for possible criminal history; identifies true owners of vehicles and other involved vehicles for valid registrations and insurance. Gathers and documents all facts and findings from Hit and Run investigations. Prepares and submits monthly Hit and Run reports to the CID. Prepares and mails or emails disposition letters to complainants, defendants, and witnesses (when cases are suspended, closed or unfounded). Provides courteous, effective, and professional service at all times. Presents Arrest Affidavits to the Office of the Attorney General and attends court proceedings as notified. Occasionally attends OAG training and performs other related duties as assigned. Qualifications Knowledge of the Department’s organizational structure, policies, procedures, rules, and regulations. Thorough knowledge of investigative practices and techniques. Knowledge of MPD’s General Orders related to traffic violations and arrests. Knowledge of traffic laws of the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia; and the DC Code. Knowledge of criminal procedures for arrest warrants, judicial summons, and other traffic-related laws (including DUI/DWI). Ability to communicate orally and in writing; to conduct traffic crash investigations. Ability to work independently to support the Department’s mission and objectives. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and other common office software. Ability to interview, follow leads, research records, interpret results, evaluate data, analyze and prepare clear reports, and present results in written and oral formats. Ability to handle high-stress situations during Hit & Run investigations with strong time and task management. Skill to interpret and apply rules, regulations, policies, and procedures. Licensures, Certifications and Other Requirements The incumbent must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license. Education High School Diploma required; Bachelor’s Degree preferred. Work Experience At least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the CS-09 grade level, or its non-District equivalent, gained from public or private sector. Specialized experience includes understanding MPD’s structure, policies, procedures, and rules; applying investigative practices and traffic laws; communicating orally and operating Microsoft Office Suite; handling high-stress Hit & Run investigations; interviewing, following leads, researching records, interpreting results, evaluating data, and preparing clear, concise reports for written and oral presentation. This position is part of a 24/7 operation and may require non-traditional work hours, including rotating shifts and weekends/holidays.
