Job Description

Located in Ocean City, NJ, this full-time, contract position offers an opportunity to support a K-12 student as a 1:1 Sign Language Interpreter throughout the school year. The role is focused on facilitating effective communication between a student who is Deaf or Hard of Hearing and their peers, teachers, and school staff using American Sign Language (ASL) or an alternate communication method as specified by the students Individualized Education Program (IEP).

Responsibilities:

  • Provide real-time interpretation of spoken English into ASL (or other specified communication mode) and vice versa during classroom instruction, school activities, and educational settings.
  • Support the students comprehension of academic content, assignments, and social interactions.
  • Collaborate with educators, special education personnel, and support staff to implement accommodations and instructional strategies aligned with the students needs.
  • Maintain confidentiality and professional boundaries in compliance with FERPA and IDEA regulations.
  • Participate in IEP meetings, offering insights on communication access and educational progress.
  • Prepare for classroom content in advance to ensure accurate and effective interpretation.
  • Encourage the students independence and self-advocacy within the school environment.

Qualifications:

  • Fluency in ASL is required; certifications like RID or a minimum 3.5 EIPA score are accepted.
  • High school diploma or GED required; associates or bachelors degree in ASL Interpreting, Deaf Studies, or related fields preferred.
  • At least one year of experience working with school-aged children in an educational setting is preferred.
  • Strong understanding of Deaf culture and educational needs of students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to demonstrate professionalism, discretion, and flexibility in a dynamic school setting.
