In alignment with Gift of Life Michigan's core purpose and core values, the Donor Care Management Physician is responsible for the day-to-day activities related to medically managing organ donors to optimize organs for transplant, including but not limited to completing donor evaluations, comprehensive donor management, and medical direction to staff managing donors at the Donor Care Center at Gift of Life. Function as a liaison and medical guide to staff following patients at donor hospitals.

Duties & Responsibilities

The following job duties and responsibilities are stated in broad terms and not intended to be inclusive. Those in bold are essential duties of the position:

  • Consult on potential organ donor referrals and provide guidance as needed.
  • Lead donor management case huddles with clinical administrators and donation coordinators to devise a donor management plan for referred cases.
  • Provide a daily consult call with Gift of Life personnel on every actively managed case.
  • Work closely with team members to provide clinical intervention and direction in donor cases, including comprehensive plans of care for complex patients to achieve successful organ and tissue donation using established Donor Management Guidelines.
  • Complete chart reviews in real time or retrospectively to direct, educate, and develop donor management recommendations and opportunities for optimizing donation potential.
  • Consult with attending physicians toward medical interventions to improve physiological status of potential donors.
  • Facilitate, perform, guide, and/or direct special procedures including but not limited to echo sonography, chest X ray, central line, dialysis catheter, and arterial line placement, bronchoscopy, CRRT, radiology interpretation, and chest tube placement.
  • Write, modify, and recommend donor management guidelines, policies, and procedures in partnership with clinical operations leadership to maximize donation outcomes.
  • Serve as radiation safety officer for Gift of Life Michigan's Donor Care Unit.
  • Attend and participate in national organ donation conferences (AOPO, ATC, AST, etc.)
  • Educate clinical staff on relevant donor management topics.
  • Deliver topical and relevant instruction, such as Grand Rounds, to hospitals throughout the DSA.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Qualifications Education and/or Experience
Required
  • Medical Doctor or Doctor of Osteopathy licensed to practice medicine in Michigan.
  • Minimum of 2 years of critical care, trauma, or other related medical practice experience.
  • Must obtain and maintain ACLS certification within one year of employment.
  • Board certified or eligible in primary specialty (e.g., Internal Medicine, Critical Care, Emergency Medicine).


Preferred
  • More than 5 years of critical care, trauma, or other related medical practice experience.
  • Prior experience in a transplant center or organ/tissue procurement organization.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA)
  • Written and verbal fluency in English.
  • Ability to exercise initiative, critical thinking, and problem-solving.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office programs, including Outlook and Teams and other technology systems used in business operations.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple and competing priorities.
  • Demonstrate attention to detail.
