Job Description

A specialized opportunity is available for a Sign Language Interpreter to support K-12 students in a dynamic educational environment located in Tacoma, Washington. This contract position spans the non-school year (NSY) period, providing critical communication access for Deaf and Hard of Hearing students during summer sessions and related programs.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Facilitate effective communication between Deaf and Hard of Hearing students, their peers, teachers, and staff by accurately interpreting sign language and spoken language.
  • Support instructional activities and assist with student participation across various classroom settings.
  • Maintain confidentiality and adhere to ethical standards of interpreting within the educational context.
  • Collaborate with educators, speech therapists, and other specialists to ensure accessibility and support student learning objectives.
  • Prepare and adjust interpreting strategies based on individual student needs and lesson content.

Desired Qualifications and Experience:

  • Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) with strong interpreting skills.
  • Previous experience interpreting in K-12 educational settings preferred.
  • Familiarity with educational terminology and procedures.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Sensitivity to the cultural and linguistic needs of Deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals.
  • Relevant certification or credentialing in sign language interpreting or willingness to pursue credentialing.
