Overview

The Medical Affairs Director, Cystic Fibrosis (CF) will provide medical leadership for the Medical Affairs Department in our CF therapeutic area. This role will be accountable for working with the medical team for the development and implementation of the US Medical strategy and plans. This role will work in partnership with other cross-functional team colleagues to ensure access to the company's products, and to develop and implement cross functional plans aligned with patient, HCP and broader corporate needs. This role will work closely with a cross-functional group that includes Commercial, Market Access, Global, International Medical Affairs organizations, US Public Affairs, Corporate Communications, Legal, Compliance (OBIE), Regulatory, Research & Development, HRBP and Finance.

Responsibilities

• Provides comprehensive expertise and guidance in the Therapeutic Area and Vertex drugs
• Establishes and ensures flawless execution of the US Medical Plan, in accordance with corporate policies and procedures and applicable local laws and regulations
• Critically interprets scientific data and determines the potential impact of new research on scientific and medical understanding of assigned products
• Shares country/regional insights with global teams to ensure global medical strategies and activities reflect the needs of the country/region
• Provides fair and balanced medical information and education to health care professionals and payers that support the safe and effective use of Vertex drugs in the appropriate patients
• Fosters patient access to Vertex drugs, by supporting the commercial organization in the preparation/review of reimbursement dossiers and presenting scientific data as required to key stakeholders in the access process
• Performs/oversees medical/scientific training for field medical teams, commercial, and other internal stakeholders
• Contributes to the local Brand Team, representing the TA (scientific and medical expertise) and ensuring all activities address patient well-being and respect data integrity
• Ensures compliance at country level with company policies, medical affairs SOPs, GCP and ICH
• Assesses local promotional materials and ensures that all claims are fully supported by scientific data, and are presented in an accurate, fair and balanced manner

Education and Experience

• Required Education Level: Terminal scientific degree (e.g., PhD or PharmD)
• Required Experience: Typically requires 8 years of experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience
• Required Knowledge/Skills: Experience in Medical Affairs within the biotechnology or pharmaceutical industry, experience in rare diseases preferred; ability to work across a complex matrix organization and influence at all levels; maintains a high level of expertise and judgment in relation to both technical and ethical aspects of a medical director role and responsibilities; ability to anticipate issues and be flexible and reactive to situations; knowledge of national healthcare and regulatory environments; excellent understanding of reimbursement mechanisms and the acceptability of PE models and PRO research by national payers; experience in scientific interactions with payer bodies; knowledge and understanding of marketplace dynamics; track record of ability to plan, initiate and complete projects within allocated time frames & delivering high quality successful results; ability to work within a multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural team on common projects and goals, at national and regional level; capacity to critically analyze current scientific literature; good understanding of the basics of health economics and patient outcomes; skilled in effective presentations of clinical/scientific data; competence in IT tools and web-based meetings; English language fluent, written and spoken

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $240,000 - $360,000

The range provided is based on what we believe is a reasonable estimate for the base salary pay range for this job at the time of posting. This role is eligible for an annual bonus and annual equity awards. Some roles may also be eligible for overtime pay, in accordance with federal and state requirements. Actual base salary pay will be based on a number of factors, including skills, competencies, experience, and other job-related factors permitted by law.
