Musical Accompanist


Job Summary:


The Musical Accompanist for a high school musical is responsible for providing live piano or instrumental accompaniment during rehearsals and performances. The accompanist works closely with the musical director, cast, and crew to ensure that the music is delivered seamlessly and enhances the overall production. The role requires musical expertise, collaboration, and the ability to adapt to the varying pace and demands of a live theater environment. The accompanist is a key member of the creative team, supporting both the cast's vocal performances and the overall musical direction of the show.

Qualifications:


Proficiency in playing piano or other relevant instruments (e.g., keyboard, organ) with the ability to accompany vocalists and ensembles in a live setting.


Strong understanding of music theory, including harmony, melody, and rhythm.


Experience reading and performing from sheet music, including various musical genres and styles

Evaluation:


The supervisor shall annually evaluate the team leader. Such evaluation shall be reviewed with the team leader and made part of his/her permanent record.

This is a yearly stipend position. Depending on the review of school needs and the evaluation process, the term may be extended annually.

Duties and Responsibilities:


Rehearsal Support:

  1. Attend all scheduled rehearsals to provide accompaniment for vocal rehearsals, scene work, and full run-throughs.
  2. Learn and prepare all musical scores, including instrumental sections, to support the cast and production.
  3. Collaborate with the musical director to interpret the score and make any necessary adjustments.
  4. Be prepared to accompany soloists, ensembles, and the full cast as needed.
Performance Support:
  1. Perform live accompaniment for all scheduled performances, ensuring smooth musical transitions between scenes.
  2. Work closely with the stage manager to coordinate music cues and timing during live performances.
  3. Adjust to the live nature of the performance, maintaining flexibility in response to changes or unexpected events.
Music Coordination:
  1. Maintain an organized and accurate version of all music and scores, ensuring that any changes or updates are incorporated.
  2. Assist in teaching and reviewing music with the cast as needed, especially for complicated sections or harmonies.
  3. Help with the interpretation of the musical's style and tone through appropriate musical expression.
Collaboration with the Director and Cast:
  1. Work in close coordination with the musical director, choreographer, and other team members to ensure the music fits the overall vision for the production.
  2. Be receptive to feedback from the director, cast, and musical director to adjust and improve performances.
  3. Administrative Support:
  4. Ensure that all necessary sheet music and musical materials are available for rehearsals and performances.
  5. Record and track musical progress, noting any issues or challenges during rehearsals for follow-up.

Physical Demands:


The physical demands of the High School Musical Accompanist role include sitting for extended periods while playing the piano or other instruments during rehearsals and performances. The accompanist must have strong manual dexterity, using their hands, fingers, and wrists for intricate musical movements. The position requires endurance to maintain focus and performance during long rehearsals and live shows. The accompanist should also have good mobility to move between different areas of the rehearsal or performance space and the ability to listen attentively for musical timing and synchronization. Additionally, physical stamina is necessary to sustain focus over multiple hours of practice or performance. While the role mainly involves sitting, occasional lifting or transporting of equipment, such as a portable keyboard or sheet music, may be required. Flexibility is important as the accompanist must adapt to changes in the performance environment or musical direction.
