Position Overview

We are seeking a self-motivated and experienced Machine Learning Engineering Intern to join our team. This role is ideal for someone pursuing or holding a Master’s in Data Science, Computer Science, or a related field — with prior professional experience in Software Engineering or Machine Learning Engineering or Data Engineering.

You’ll work closely with Machine Learning engineers, data scientists and application engineers to accelerate experimentation , translate research prototypes into production , and reduce technical debt . You should be able to operate independently, drive progress with minimal oversight, and deliver high-quality contributions in a fast-moving environment.

Our team primarily works on Databricks (Spark/Delta Lake) and AWS infrastructure to build scalable and production-grade ML pipelines. This role requires strong cross-functional collaboration, including integrating ML models with data science workflows and application layer services to ensure smooth and reliable end-to-end user experiences.

Responsibilities:

  • Partner with researchers to build, evaluate, and productionize Machine Learning artifacts
  • Help clean up or refactor legacy systems and pipelines to improve maintainability, performance, and cost efficiency
  • Contribute to the development of robust, end-to-end ML workflows on Databricks , including feature engineering, model training, evaluation, and deployment
  • Design and maintain scalable data pipelines using Spark and Delta Live Tables
  • Support monitoring, alerting, and CI/CD workflows for ML systems
  • Work with AWS services (e.g., S3, Lambda, ECS, Sagemaker, etc.) as needed to integrate ML capabilities into broader systems
  • Collaborate across engineering, data, and product teams to iterate on prototypes and deliver results in production

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Pursuing or completed Master’s degree in Data Science, Computer Science, or related field
  • 2+ years of relevant industry experience in ML engineering, software engineering, or data engineering
  • Proficiency in Python and common ML frameworks (e.g., scikit-learn, PyTorch, TensorFlow, spary-nlp)
  • Working knowledge of Spark or distributed compute frameworks
  • Hands-on experience with distributed computing, ML experimentation, and pipeline management
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work independently

Beneficial Experience:

  • Previous exposure to healthcare data, medical terminology, or regulatory frameworks (e.g., HIPAA)
  • Experience working with EHR data, clinical notes, or coding systems (ICD, SNOMED, CPT, etc.)
  • Building ML models and integrating them into real-time or batch production systems
  • Familiarity with ML Ops best practices (e.g., model serving, MLflow)
  • Strong focus on code quality, testing, and long-term maintainability
  • Familiarity with Databricks and AWS services and DevOps tooling (Terraform, Docker, etc.)

Internships will be 14 weeks and Co-ops will be 6 months in length. 

All Boston-based interns and Co-ops will be asked to be hybrid in our Boston, MA office (2-3 days per week). For those located outside of commuting distance, remote opportunities may still be available.
