Position Objective

This role plays a vital part in delivering high-quality, cost-efficient, and collaborative surgical care within the cardiac service line. The focus is on ensuring that the operating room (OR) and surgical procedures are conducted in a manner that prioritizes the safety of both patients and staff. The Cardiac Team Coordinator is responsible for providing both direct and indirect patient care during surgeries, acting as a subject matter expert in the cardiac specialty, serving as a resource for revenue capture coordinators and business managers, and managing the organization and use of necessary supplies and instruments. This position requires regular on-call scheduling.

Key Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with the Surgical Leader to ensure that all OR team members prioritize patient safety and reliability, fostering a skilled and well-rounded team of circulating and scrub personnel.
  • Effectively plan and communicate with the Charge Nurse and Central Sterile Processing (CSP) to coordinate patients, equipment, and staffing, ensuring efficient case flow that meets unit metrics.
  • Manage safe surgical patient care by developing a 4-week staffing schedule and an on-call schedule for cardiac procedures, reviewing and approving RN and Surgical Technologist (ST) PTO requests, and distributing staffing schedules to relevant stakeholders. Work with the Surgical Scheduler and surgeons to ensure accurate and efficient case bookings, minimizing patient wait times.
  • In partnership with the Surgical Leader and educators, organize regular team meetings aimed at mentoring team members, fostering a culture of trust and respect, enhancing communication skills, addressing educational gaps, reviewing errors, and brainstorming solutions for quality improvement metrics.
  • Collaborate with Clinical Nursing Directors, Clinical Educators, vendors, and the Surgical Leader to discuss best clinical practices and conduct in-services as necessary.
  • Assist the Clinical Director, along with Materials Management and Central Sterile Services, with capital and operational budget requests and their utilization.
  • Utilize the SBAR format to work with the Team Leader in maintaining an accurate Preference Card system that reflects standardization while addressing actual case needs and charges for inventory management of supplies and instruments.
  • Engage in onboarding for surgeons and team members, as well as planning for new procedures, directly providing and coordinating orientation for new RNs and STs joining the cardiac team.
  • Contribute to the effective scheduling of surgical cases using the EPIC computer system in collaboration with the scheduling office.
  • Work with the Surgical Leader to conduct annual performance evaluations for team members and address any behavioral or clinical issues promptly.
Qualifications and Experience
  • A minimum of two years of experience in an open-heart operating room is required.
  • At least five years of experience as a Surgical Technologist in an operating room setting is necessary.
  • Graduation from an accredited surgical technologist program or an equivalent qualification is essential.
  • Strong clinical, technical, interpersonal, and organizational skills are required.
Licenses and Certifications
  • Current American Heart Association Health Care Provider BLS certification.
  • Membership in the Association of Surgical Technologists (AST) or a similar professional organization is required.
  • Certification as a Surgical Technologist is mandatory.

Salary Range: $40 — $55 USD
