Be a Financial Steward of Research That Transforms Veterans' Lives

The Palo Alto Veterans Institute for Research (PAVIR) is seeking a Volunteer Board Member to serve on our Finance Committee. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced finance or investment professional to contribute to the mission of advancing Veteran and public health through innovative research.

PAVIR supports one of the largest VA-affiliated research programs in the country, partnering closely with Stanford University and the VA Palo Alto Health Care System. We oversee over $30M annually in research funding across areas like mental health, cancer, cardiology, and rehabilitation medicine.

This is a volunteer position on our Finance Committee, and no compensation will be provided.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Participate in monthly Finance Committee meetings (90 minutes each)
  • Review and analyze financial reports and provide strategic insights
  • Advise on investment policies, reserve strategy, and risk management
  • Collaborate with the Audit Committee on financial reporting and compliance matters
  • Provide input on financial policy, audit preparation, and indirect cost strategy
  • Join occasional ad hoc calls or working groups (~1 hour each)
  • Participate in quarterly board meetings
Ideal Candidate Profile:
  • Background in finance, investment management, accounting, or financial strategy
  • Prior board or committee experience (non-profit or for-profit) preferred
  • Familiarity with financial oversight in a grant-funded or non-profit environment
  • Passionate about public service, medical research, and/or Veteran health
Estimated Annual Commitment:

~18-25 hours per year, including meeting prep and occasional calls.
