Summary:

The Volunteer Coordinator supports the Director of Volunteer Services in various administrative and departmental tasks, volunteer training, outdoor project coordination and facilitation. Serves as a liaison between City Park and the community to fulfill park needs with community volunteer resources. The ideal candidate has experience working outdoors ,on a computer, knowledgeable in horticultural practices and/or Louisiana native and invasive plant species, organized, works responsibly within a team and individually, possesses initiative, and able to maintain a professional and inclusive environment to support a wide range of Volunteer Department requirements.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assists Director or Supervisor in coordinating and executing a wide range of volunteer opportunities within City Park to ensure effective program delivery.
  • Supports and engages volunteers to foster their development and encourage long-term involvement.
  • Upholds policies, procedures, and standards of safety and risk mitigation amongst volunteers and within the department.

  • Regularly informs management of the status of volunteer projects and promptly communicates any issues that arise.
Administrative Responsibilities
  • Maintains professional and welcoming volunteer services by answering phones, email correspondence, in-person communications, and scheduling.
  • Administer and maintain software essential to the volunteer program, ensuring data accuracy and accessibility.
  • Assists in the maintenance of accurate volunteer records, project event information, data reporting, and project resources.
Field Work

  • Assists in the maintenance and upkeep of Couturie Forest and aids in planning to keep forest native, healthy, and accessible.
  • Actively coordinates, participates, and engages in work activities with volunteers, including set up and breakdown of volunteer projects.

  • Assists in the organization, cleanliness, and upkeep of the Volunteer Center, tools, and equipment.
  • Coordinates and executes planned volunteer activities that align with the organization's mission and goals.

  • Safely operates equipment and machinery (driving a UTV, truck/trailer, operating brush cutter, string trimmers, chainsaw, skid steer, etc) as trained and needed for project preparation.
  • Works a schedule of Tuesday – Saturday or as required by volunteer activities.
QualificationsEducation and Experience
  • A bachelor’s degree or certification in a related field or equivalent experience in volunteer management, outdoor field projects, or programming/public engagement is preferred.
  • Experience coordinating various size groups of people for different tasks.
  • Working experience with best practices in horticulture preferred, knowledge of Louisiana native and invasive plants management is a plus!
  • Must hold a valid driver’s license.

Skills and Abilities
  • Proficiency in learning/using volunteer management software and other relevant technology (Microsoft Suite, Word, Excel, etc)
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to build relationships with diverse groups.
  • Leadership and public speaking skills with the ability to inspire and motivate volunteers.
  • Ability to work outdoors and lead groups in projects.

The physical demands will require the employee to lift or move objects up to 50 lbs., occasionally lift or move objects up to 100 lbs.

Activities of the position occur primarily outdoors, for field and forestry projects, and within indoor office settings. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to outside weather conditions of the environment, including extreme low and high temperatures, wet and/or humid conditions, insects, plant material, and dust and dirt. Face-to face interaction with Park guests and volunteers in a public setting is frequent. Other environmental conditions include occasional noisy environments, hazardous conditions including vibration, and proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, and exposure to high heat or exposure to chemicals, poor ventilation, and small and/or enclosed spaces.
