Job Description

The ACLU of Northern California (ACLU NorCal) seeks an Investigator to join our San Francisco office for a 5-year time limited term. The Investigator's time will focus on the rights of unhoused people during encampment clearances and support and advance the work of the Legal Advocacy Department. The role will include significant travel, long work hours with periods of standing and walking, that may include nights and weekends, on occasion.

This position is based in San Francisco and requires field work and in-office work. The position is represented by IFPTE Local 20

What You Will Do
  • Observe and document encampment clearances; obtain sworn statements from unhoused people and other witnesses.
  • Conduct outreach to unhoused people regarding their experiences at encampment clearances.
  • Review documents and data regarding encampment clearances and relay investigative findings to other team members.
  • Conduct factual investigations to inform and develop potential litigation or advance active litigation, including identifying and gathering documents, thoroughly reviewing documents, and preparing detailed summaries and analyses of documents and other evidence.
  • Draft affidavits and declarations based on interviews and support preparation of clients and witness for public education, media, formal depositions, and other related activities.

What You Will Bring
  • A minimum of 3 years' experience in working in a law firm, legal non-profit or legal services organization, social work, or, as an investigator or journalist, or in the non-profit sector or related field.
  • Strong research, analysis, and writing abilities, including ability to draft declarations while in the field.
  • Strong witness interview skills and the ability to talk to and relate to people from a diversity of backgrounds.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively communicate to various audiences about complex and sensitive issues.
  • Strong project and time management skills, including a high level of organization, attention to detail, and follow-through, while balancing and prioritizing multiple activities and responsibilities

  • The base salary for this position is $ 43.02 - $ 50.97 per hour with the final amount depending on experience, skills, and qualifications.
